Reality is the life you live now that is chosen for you. Constructed reality is the complete opposite it is a reality that you chose for yourself. Some texts that we have read in this unit that relate back to this essential question are “500 Days of Summer”, “The Truman Show”, and “We Are Many.”
Individuals try to construct their own reality but they fail to realize that the outcome ends up being the complete opposite as they wished it would be. In the text “500 Days Of Summer” the protagonist is trying to reunite with the one he loves and constructs a reality on how the night will end. Towards the end of the text the main characters constructed reality doesn’t come true. This text relates back to the essential question on what the difference is between reality and constructed reality. The message that is given from the text is that constructed reality isn’t true it is a made up fantasy. It is an expectation that will never be accurate. In the text we see two sides of expectation vs. reality. In the story we see that reality is the complete opposite of this expectation the main character had wanted.
Another text that relates to the essential question is “We Are Many.” In this text the main character is worshiping other realities but his own. Stated in the text “All the books I read lionize dazzling hero figures, brimming with self-assurance. I die with envy of them;” This quote relates back to the essential question on the difference between reality and constructed reality. The main character in the text is trying to change his reality and worshiping other realities by wanting to be a hero. In his reality he is just an ordinary person but as he watches these other individuals who are heroes he envies them because of him wanting to feel the same. In the text the main character states “When a stately home bursts into flames, instead of the fireman I summon, an arsonist bursts on the scene, and he is I. There is nothing I can do.What must I do to distinguish myself? How can I put myself together?” This quote relates back to the essential question because he compares his reality to a fireman’s. In the text the arsonist symbolizes him and his reality on not being able to be the hero of the situation. His constructed reality in this conflict is to be the fireman but in reality he is unable to save the day.
A text that we read during the unit that relates back to the essential question is “The Truman Show.” In this story the main character is trapped in a reality show but he tries everyway possible to escape. In the text the main character is trying to escape his daily life and take a vacation to Fiji but the creator does everything in his power to keep him from leaving. Truman wants to construct a new reality someplace other then his ordinary life. This event relates back to the essential question on the difference between reality and constructed reality. In this situation the constructed reality would be Fiji and reality would be the set of the show. What is the difference between the two? Truman sees the set as a daily routine that he is getting tired of Fiji is his chance to escape that daily routine and become adventurous. Another event that happened in the text is Truman once again tried escaping his reality not by an airplane but by a boat. He had faced one of his biggest fears on sailing across the ocean to a new reality. But the creator soon tries to end the constructed reality Truman had dreamed of. This event relates to the essential question because Truman’s constructed reality was being far away from the set but he had got sucked back in to it.
What is difference between reality and constructed reality? Reality is real life individuals experience each day. Constructed reality is a reality those worship or wish for. In all these texts they answer this essential question or relate to it. Each protagonist had constructed a reality or wished for a different reality other then the one they have.
